Mrs. Clandon is above the weakness of love. She teaches Gloria in such a way that she can resist the influence of love. But like all weak women, she fails to protect herself. Being urged by the life force, she has been caught up in the mashes of the amorous glances of Valentine. So, Mrs. Clandon wants to arouse jealousy in the heart of Gloria. To do so, she tells her daughter that Valentine is a past master in the game of love. He is in the habit of setting traps to catch women and Gloria has been caught in his trap. His traps are often baited with love speeches. The angler uses bait on a hook to attract fishes. Being lured by the bait, the fishes that take the bait are caught.
Similarly, Valentine uses love-speeches as bait in his trap to catch foolish women. He is a duellist of s/ex who makes devices to conquer the hearts of the fair s/ex. Trapping women in his profession. He is practising his profession in order to make him a perfect duellist of sex. Thus, Mrs, Clandon tries her best to convince her daughter not to fall under the influence of Valnetine which does not work
